The North Jersey Pros - More Than Just A Game
North Jersey ProsThe North Jersey Pros professional basketball team, new members of the Eastern Basketball Alliance (EBA), held their first official team tryout on Sunday, June 13th in Passaic, NJ. The tryout was an overwhelming success. It was full of extremely talented players, many of which that play or have played professionally in Germany, Poland, Dominican Republic or in other various professional basketball minor leagues throughout the US, all sharing the same desire; to become part of the North Jersey Pros. The talented group of over 25 hopefuls were ran through a rigorous series of basketball drills by North Jersey Pros Head Coach, Joseph Amador. "Condition is key", said Amador.

But what really stood out most to me, even more than all of the high-flying dunking, net snapping three-pointers, and insane crossover dribbling was the team's underlining message: Be a Pro ON the court, as well as OFF the court. Community definitely does comes first with the entire North Jersey Pros organization. That message was clearly sent by North Jersey Pros owner, Christian Villar, Team General Manager, Ed Herrera, and Head Coach, Joe Amador. Villar is extremely motivated and highly involved with many local charitable and non-profit organizations. "Being a North Jersey Pro is more than just being able to shoot or dribble a basketball. You also need to be an active role model in the community.", said Villar. Villar, who plays guard for the North Jersey Pros as well as professionally in the Dominican Republic, and Herrera, who also played professionally in the Dominican Republic, have already hosted a number of youth basketball clinics and camps, with more scheduled in the near future. "We need to be there for the kids." said Herrera, "It's important for us to be a positive influence for them."

Another highlight from the tryout was the presence of Passaic Mayor, Dr. Alex Blanco. "When Chris came to my office and we spoke about the team and the concept, I fell in love with it. It is not just the sports aspect, but what you guys are made of that will help the city of Passaic, especially the youth, by being role models.", said Dr. Blanco as he addressed the 25 or so hopefuls.

With so many inflated egos and just the pure greed of many professional athletes today, it was quite refreshing to see an entire professional organization (including: team owners, players, coaches and even a mayor!) that is truly dedicated to our children and the North Jersey community. I kindly ask all of our GreatNJ.com community to come out and support this fine organization. The North Jersey Pros season is scheduled to kick-off sometime in November 2010.
